Winter Safety Tips for Schools: Preparing for Unpredictable Weather

At Reach South Academy Trust, one of our key responsibilities is keeping our students, staff and visitors safe across every site. With our increasingly unpredictable weather, our schools and colleges face unique challenges in keeping everyone safe in unpredictable weather. With darker mornings and evenings, icy conditions, and the risks posed by storms, proactive measures are essential. We felt it would be helpful to share some of the key steps all schools and colleges can take to ensure a safe environment for all:

1. Keep Rock Salt Readily Available

Slippery paths and playgrounds can pose a serious risk in icy weather. Stocking up on rock salt allows schools and colleges to quickly treat high-traffic areas like entrances, walkways, and outdoor play areas. Regularly salting these surfaces helps prevent slips and ensures safe movement across the site.

2. Clear Fallen Leaves Promptly

Wet, rain-soaked leaves can create dangerously slippery surfaces on school and college grounds. Routinely clear pathways, playgrounds, and car parks to reduce the risk of falls and keep outdoor spaces safe for students, staff and visitors.

3. Conduct Regular Safety Checks After Storms

High winds can lead to loose roof tiles or broken tree branches, which pose safety risks. After storms, inspect roofs and outdoor areas for potential hazards. Quickly address any issues, such as securing tiles or trimming damaged branches, to prevent accidents.

4. Involve the School and College Community

Educate students and staff about staying safe during winter. Encourage students to wear appropriate footwear for icy conditions and remind everyone to report any hazards they notice, such as slippery spots or fallen branches.

A Safe School is a Happy School

By taking these precautions, schools and colleges can create a safe and welcoming environment for learning, even during winter's challenges. A well-prepared school or college helps minimise risks, ensuring that students, staff, and visitors can navigate the season safely.

Stay vigilant, stay safe, and let’s make this winter worry-free!
